Premium Kenyan Arabica Coffee Beans - Dark Roast | Kirenge Gold - Bold, Smoky & Full-Bodied

The bold cup that tells the truth about dark roast.
Most dark roasts are strong in bitterness, not in quality. Kirenge Gold Dark Roast is different. We start with Kenya AA 100 % arabica, the highest classification in Kenya's grading system, and roast it to bring out deep caramelized sweetness and full body without the char. The result is a bold, intense cup that's bold in all the right ways.
One thing worth knowing: dark roast has essentially the same caffeine as our medium or light roast by weight. What changes is the flavor profile, deeper, richer, and lower in acidity. This also makes it the friendliest option if you have a sensitive stomach.

Tasting Notes

Deep dark chocolate and caramelized sweetness - no bitterness.
Warm baking spice complexity in the mid-palate.
Full, heavy body with very low acidity.
Long, satisfying finish, the cup that lingers

Brews Best As

Espresso - thick, rich crema; the base for outstanding lattes.
French press -maximum body and depth, zero harsh edges
Cold brew - smooth, low-acid concentrate perfect for iced coffee
Drip - a powerful, reliable everyday cup

Premium Kenyan Arabica Coffee Beans – Medium Roast | Kirenge Gold Smooth, Balanced & Beautifully Complex

Kenya grown. Atlanta roasted. Naturally sweet enough to drink completely black.

Kirenge Gold Medium Roast is our most versatile cup, and the one most customers discover they can finally enjoy without milk or sugar. Grown at 1,500–1,800m on the red volcanic soils of Kirenge Farm, our Kenyan Arabica develops a natural sweetness during slow high-altitude ripening that most blended coffees have to fake with additives. We just roast it to the point where that sweetness comes through cleanly.

Bright blackcurrant sweetness opens the cup. Milk chocolate body carries through. Clean, tea-like finish. Nothing bitter, nothing harsh, this is what single-origin Kenyan arabica at medium roast is supposed to taste like.

Kenya Arabica Coffee Beans - Light Roast

Kirenge Gold Premium Kenyan Arabica Coffee Beans | Light Roast - Bright, Floral & Delicately Complex

Most caffeinated. Most complex. Most uncompromisingly Kenyan.

Kirenge Gold Light Roast is crafted to let Premium Kenyan Arabica beans speak for themselves. Did you know that light roast retains slightly more caffeine per scoop than dark roast? The longer a bean roasts, the more caffeine it loses. Which means Kirenge Gold Light Roast, our brightest, most vibrant cup, is also the highest-caffeine option in our range, at approximately 175–200mg per 8oz.

Grown at 1,500–1,800m on the red volcanic soils of Kirenge Farm, our SL-28 and SL-34 arabica is harvested at full ripeness and roasted lightly to preserve everything the highland terroir developed: bright citrus acidity, complex fruit character, and a clean sweetness that makes this the coffee of choice for pour-over enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes

Sparkling citrus and lemon blossom - Kirenge Farm's signature brightness.
Blackcurrant and red berry fruit complexity.
Clean, wine-like acidity with a sweet, honey finish.
Bright, layered, complex - like Kenyan coffee is supposed to taste

Brews Best As

Pour-over (V60 or Chemex) - best for revealing citrus clarity and fruit complexity; use 93–96°C water.
Aeropress - clean, bright cup with excellent caffeine extraction.
Drip coffee - reliable and easy; grind medium-fine for best results.

Dark Roast Coffee: The Bold, Low Acid American Classic

by James Kamawe on Sep 04 2025

For many, dark roast coffee is the quintessential American classic—the bold, robust, and powerful cup that fuels mornings and defines coffee breaks. But a truly great dark roast is more than just a dark color; it's a profile of deep, sweet complexity. At Kirenge Gold, we reject the notion that dark roasting is used to conceal flaws. Instead, we use precision small batch roasting on our premium beans to create a bold coffee that is intensely rich and smoky, without the harsh bitterness of over-roasted beans. What is Dark Roast Coffee? Dark roast coffee is roasted until after the "second crack," at internal temperatures between 437°F – 446°F (225°C – 230°C). This process allows the natural sugars in the bean to caramelize fully and the oils to rise to the surface, giving the whole bean coffee a characteristic shiny, oily appearance. The result is a brew with a heavy body, low acidity, and flavors dominated by the roasting process itself. The Dark Roast Flavor Profile: Depth and Comfort Our dark roast is a masterclass in balance. We meticulously roast our specialty coffee beans to develop a symphony of sweet, roasted notes without crossing into acridity. The flavor profile is defined by: Bold & Smoky: Experience the classic, robust profile with deep notes of dark chocolate, toasted almond, and a smooth, smoky finish that lingers pleasantly. Low Acidity, Heavy Body: This is a standout feature for many drinkers. The extended roasting process breaks down acids, resulting in an incredibly smooth, low-acid coffee with a syrupy, full mouthfeel that is gentle on the stomach. A Perfect Canvas: The familiar, robust flavor makes it the ideal espresso blend and a perfect companion for milk, cream, or sugar, forming the foundation of incredible lattes and cappuccinos. Is Dark Roast Stronger? Debunking the Caffeine Myth One of the most common questions we get is, "Is dark roast stronger?" The answer depends on your definition of "strong." Flavor: Yes, dark roast is stronger in taste. The bold, smoky flavors are more pronounced and intense. Caffeine: No, it is not stronger in caffeine. The longer roasting process breaks down caffeine molecules. Light roast has slightly more caffeine by volume because the beans are denser. The powerful flavor comes from caramelization, not a higher caffeine kick. Health Benefits of Low Acidity Dark Roast Choosing a dark roast isn't just about taste; it can also be a conscious choice for well-being: Stomach-Friendly: Its low acidity makes it an excellent option for those with acid reflux or sensitive stomachs. Rich in Antioxidants: While different from those in light roasts, dark roasts are a significant source of antioxidants like melanoidins, which are formed during the Maillard reaction in roasting. May Support Gut Health: Some studies suggest that compounds in dark roast coffee can help balance stomach acid. How to Brew Dark Roast Coffee for a Rich, Smooth Cup The brewing method you choose can enhance the inherent qualities of your dark roast. We recommend: Espresso Machine: The ultimate method for espresso beans. Our dark roast produces a rich, creamy shot with a perfect crema. French Press: The immersion brewing style is ideal for extracting the heavy body and rich flavors of dark roast coffee. Moka Pot: A stovetop brewer that makes a strong, espresso-like coffee, perfectly suited to the dark roast's intense profile. Drip Coffee Maker: A reliable and convenient method for a consistently satisfying and bold cup of coffee. Pro Tip: Use a coarser coffee grind size for French Press and a fine grind for espresso. For the freshest taste, always use fresh roasted coffee and grind your whole bean coffee just before brewing. Kirenge Gold’s Dark Roast: Precision Roasting for a Smooth Finish Many mass-produced dark roasts are charred to mask low-quality, stale beans. We do the opposite. We start with high-quality, premium beans. Our master roasters then apply heat with precision in our small batch process, carefully watching for the "second crack" to develop deep flavor without burning. The result is a surprisingly smooth, complex dark roast that delivers boldness without bitterness. Dark Roast vs. Light Roast: Choosing Your Brew Feature Dark Roast Light Roast Flavor Bold, Smoky, Chocolatey, Nutty Fruity, Floral, Bright, Complex Acidity Very Low High (Bright) Body Heavy, Syrupy, Full Light, Tea-like, Delicate Caffeine (by vol.) Dark Roast Coffee FAQs Q: Is dark roast coffee less acidic? A: Yes. The extended roasting process significantly reduces the chlorogenic acid levels, making it a low-acidity coffee that is easier on the stomach. Q: What are the best beans for espresso? A: While any roast can be used, dark roast beans are the classic choice for espresso because they produce a richer crema, a heavier body, and their bold flavor stands up well to milk. Q: Why is my dark roast coffee bitter? A: Bitterness is often a sign of over-extraction, not necessarily the roast. Try a coarser coffee grind size, shorter brew time, or slightly cooler water. A quality dark roast should be smoky and sweet, not harshly bitter. Q: Can I use dark roast for cold brew? A: Absolutely! Dark roast makes an excellent cold brew coffee, yielding a very smooth, low-acidity, and chocolatey concentrate that is less likely to have bitter notes. Love a Bold Cup? So Do We!
