Which Instant Coffee Has the Most Caffeine? Brands Compared

Short answer: Of the published figures we found, Starbucks VIA has the most caffeine. It comes in at about 130–140 mg per packet, as listed when we checked in October 2026. Regular granulated instants like Folgers, Taster's Choice and Nescafé usually land between about 50 and 90 mg per cup. A typical 8 oz cup of brewed coffee has about 95 mg.

Coffee Serving Caffeine
Starbucks VIA (standard) 1 packet 130–140 mg
Brewed coffee 8 fl oz (237 ml) 95 mg
Generic instant coffee 1 rounded tsp (1.8 g) 57 mg

Which instant coffee has the most caffeine?

Starbucks VIA is the highest-caffeine instant coffee in the figures we found. Caffeine Informer lists about 130–140 mg per packet, a figure it got from Starbucks customer service. Treeline Review lists the same range and says its numbers come from the makers.

One caution. CleverHiker lists VIA at only 65 mg per serving and does not say how it got that number. We found no independent lab test that ranks US instant brands. So treat this as "highest on paper", not a measured result.

The VIA Iced sachets are made for two servings. Caffeine Informer lists them at 260–280 mg per sachet. If you mix the whole sachet into one large glass, you drink all of that at once.

Why is Starbucks VIA higher in caffeine?

VIA is higher mostly because it is not only dried coffee. It contains finely ground coffee as well. Caffeine Informer describes it as micro-ground, meaning ground to a powder so fine it disperses in water, to add flavor and caffeine.

Standard instant coffee is brewed coffee that has been dried into granules or crystals. Freeze-dried instant is one common type. You stir it in, it dissolves, and the caffeine in your cup is whatever survived in that scoop of powder.

Instant coffee with the highest caffeine: brand comparison

Most of these figures come from Caffeine Informer, a third-party caffeine database. It is not a lab, and some of its numbers are estimates or older references rather than brand labels. Serving sizes differ too, so compare these as rough guides. Figures are as listed when we checked in October 2026.

Instant coffee Serving as listed Caffeine Source
Starbucks VIA (standard) 1 packet 130–140 mg Caffeine Informer
Nescafé Gold or Blend 43 8 fl oz 50–90 mg Caffeine Informer
Folgers Classic Roast 1 serving 71 mg Caffeine Informer
Mount Hagen 8 fl oz (about 1 tsp, 2 g) 70 mg Caffeine Informer
Waka Instant 1 serving 70 mg Treeline Review
Nescafé Taster's Choice 8 fl oz (1.5 tsp) 49 mg Caffeine Informer

A few notes on these numbers. Caffeine Informer says the Folgers figure is not listed by the brand and comes from an early reference. The Taster's Choice figure is an estimate based on 1.5 teaspoons of powder in 8 oz of water. Mount Hagen shows 70 mg in two sources, but another review lists a much higher number, likely for a bigger serving.

Does instant coffee have less caffeine than brewed coffee?

Usually, yes, per cup. Using USDA figures as reported by third-party sites, a rounded teaspoon of instant has about 57 mg, while 8 oz of brewed coffee has about 95 mg. Another site citing USDA puts instant a little higher, at about 62 mg per 8 oz.

The main reason is the dose. Instant is made from brewed coffee, and most of its caffeine survives drying, says a retailer blog from Green Plantation. People simply stir in just 1 or 2 teaspoons, which is less coffee than goes into a brewed cup.

Brewing time matters too. Caffeine Informer notes that drip, filter and percolator methods keep water on the grounds longer, so they pull out more caffeine.

Lab data muddies the picture a little. A small set of studies summarized by Barista Bench found a median of 90 mg per 8 oz for instant (range 31–167 mg) and 103 mg for brewed (range 21–208 mg). The overlap is large. Your own cup depends heavily on how much coffee you use. Our complete caffeine comparison guide covers other coffee types.

How to make instant coffee stronger

Add more powder. Caffeine scales with the amount of instant you use, and adding or cutting water changes the taste but not the total, per Caffeine Informer.

  1. Measure your spoon. A heaped teaspoon can weigh 1.8–2 g, about twice a level one at around 0.9 g, according to Green Plantation. That is roughly 50–60 mg versus about 28 mg.
  2. Add powder a half teaspoon at a time. Taste as you go so the cup does not turn harsh.
  3. Use less water if you want it to taste stronger. 6 oz instead of 8 oz gives a bolder flavor with the same caffeine.
  4. Dissolve it first. Stir the powder into a splash of hot water around 195 to 205°F (90 to 96°C), then top up. It mixes more evenly.
  5. Pick a higher-caffeine product. Going by the listed figures, a micro-ground instant like VIA gives you more per packet.

How much caffeine is too much from instant coffee?

The FDA says most healthy adults can have about 400 mg of caffeine a day, as summarized by the Cleveland Clinic. That is a general guide, not a personal limit. Pregnancy, medications and sensitivity can change it, so ask your doctor if you are unsure.

Doubling up on high-caffeine packets adds up fast. One VIA Iced sachet at 260–280 mg uses up two-thirds or more of that 400 mg (calculated). Our post on coffee brands with too much caffeine goes into more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Does decaf instant coffee have any caffeine?

A little. Tasting Table reports about 3 mg per packet for Starbucks VIA decaf Italian Roast, citing Starbucks, though other sites list higher figures.

Is freeze-dried instant stronger than spray-dried?

We found no reliable source showing a caffeine difference between the two drying methods. The amount of powder you use matters far more.

Does hot or cold water change the caffeine in instant coffee?

No. The caffeine is already in the powder, so water temperature only affects how well it dissolves and how it tastes.

Can I make instant coffee as strong as brewed?

Yes, by using more powder. Going by the USDA figures above, about 1.7 rounded teaspoons of generic instant would roughly match an 8 oz brewed cup (calculated).
