Questions about this coffee
Is dark roast coffee less acidic?
Yes, in taste. Longer roasting breaks down the acids that make coffee bright, so dark roast tastes smoother and less sharp.
Is this coffee good for espresso?
Yes. Buy whole bean and grind fine. It makes a rich shot with a thick crema.
Is dark roast stronger?
In flavor, yes. In caffeine, no.
Will it taste burnt?
No. We watch for the second crack and stop there, which gives depth without a burnt taste.
Whole bean or ground?
Whole bean if you have a grinder. See our grind size chart.

The bold cup that tells the truth about dark roast.
Most dark roasts are strong in bitterness, not in quality. Kirenge Gold Dark Roast is different. We start with Kenya AA 100 % arabica, the highest classification in Kenya's grading system, and roast it to bring out deep caramelized sweetness and full body without the char. The result is a bold, intense cup that's bold in all the right ways.
One thing worth knowing: dark roast has essentially the same caffeine as our medium or light roast by weight. What changes is the flavor profile, deeper, richer, and lower in acidity. This also makes it the friendliest option if you have a sensitive stomach.
Tasting Notes
- Deep dark chocolate and caramelized sweetness - no bitterness.
- Warm baking spice complexity in the mid-palate.
- Full, heavy body with very low acidity.
- Long, satisfying finish, the cup that lingers
Brews Best As
- Espresso - thick, rich crema; the base for outstanding lattes.
- French press -maximum body and depth, zero harsh edges
- Cold brew -Â smooth, low-acid concentrate perfect for iced coffee
- Drip - a powerful, reliable everyday cup

If you drink your coffee black, or want to know what people mean when they call Kenyan coffee special, start here.
Tasting notes

•     Blackcurrant and red berry
•     A clean, wine-like acidity

Â
Where it comes from
Every bean is grown on Kirenge Farm in Kiambu County, Kenya, which our family has farmed since the 1950s. The coffee grows at 1,500 to 1,800 meters on red volcanic soil, where cool air slows the cherries and builds sweetness. It is Kenya AA grade, from the SL-28 and SL-34 varieties, picked by hand at full ripeness.
Roasted weekly
We roast in small batches every week in Atlanta and ship within 48 hours.
Brews best as
•     Pour-over (V60 or Chemex): the clearest citrus and fruit. Use water at 200 to 205°F (93 to 96°C).
•     AeroPress: a clean, bright cup.
•     Drip: easy and reliable. Use a medium grind.
Â
Available in
Whole bean or ground. Single 12 oz bag, 2-pack or 3-pack.
Caffeine
This is 100% Arabica coffee, so its caffeine is in the normal range for coffee. Brewed coffee averages about 96 mg per 8 oz cup. Light roast gives slightly more caffeine per scoop than dark roast, because the beans are denser. By weight, all three of our roasts are the same.
